FLIPSIDE 22:

ROUND ONE: DAVE DAMAGE

This show was good/bad. First off it had a super lineup and lots of beer on tap. I had a fun time rolling around the floor and getting roaring drunk. Hud carved an "H" in my arm with a broken piece of glass, I know, how passe'. Now the bands.....

Black Flag = God. "It's not my imagination, there's a gun in my back!" is great!!! Then the Stains, total abrasive, grinding, painful noise! The best band I've ever seen in my life!!! Then two members of the Stains and two members of the Violent Children did a wicked version of 'Bodies' and 'EMI'. Violent Children are real punk, but it's funny to hear Mexicans singing with an English accent. Now the bad part... either the bands fucked up, or the management fucked up or something because there was an hour long wait (Mau Maus up to old tricks). People got restless, started breaking windows, destroying art work in the back and in general trashed the place. This pisses me off, so here's my attempt at a ball-busting editorial: I know you people have to prove your punkness every two seconds, but because of you the show was cancelled. Because of you fuckheads the police showed up and we get a violent rep because of it. Do you cretins want to ruin for yourselves? Do you wanna pay $5 or $6.SO or $8.50 at the Starwood or Whisky or S+M Civic shitholes?? If that's what you want then punk is dead and you've killed it. Mindless distructlon achieves nothing. Because of you the Fleetwood, the Hideaway and Baces Hall were all ruined. FUCK YOU!

ROUND TWO: HELEN

Adolescents couldn't make it because they were playing Somewhere Else, and maybe making more money too. So we got a treat when notorious Black Flag graced the hall and opened the show. Everyone agrees that they played 'better than ever before' and it was especially fun that we could actually see and hear them play. After some delay the Stains played a set that, as usual, was a bit lengthy. I don't know why this band doesn't rate, if you can figure it out please let me (and them) know what it is. Next up was a great band called?? Fallen Angel??? (I think) that got the crowd rolling again. Then came the big bang that brake it all up. It shouldn't have taken the band over an hour to set up and the back door should have been bolted. I want to apologize to the guy who broke the window, but even while I was throwing you out the door, the gang was in the back room smashing it up and pinching cameras etc... Sermon: Destroying art is a political act, whether you want it to be or not (refer to Guernica), and to trash art because you're bored is like saying you voted because you felt apathetic. Yeah, none of the crap that went on at VEX made any sense, but then, I forgot, you know more than I do. RIGHT???
