party heart in dcyouth brigade

MINOR THREAT / ARTIFICIAL PEACE / YOUTH BRIGADE / RED C / IRON CROSS / DEADLINE / NOTHING SACRED

(at a bash somewhere outside outside of Washington)

red cTo say the location of this gig was a sad commentary on the state of DC clubs would be an understatement. Most promoters prefer the "safe" inocuous bands like the SLICKEE BOYS--there's a guaranteed almighty dollar--ya would hate to risk booking any of these young vital sounding bands...Let's face it, youth clubs don't exist in this country except in fantasy--and with the majority of DC punks shunning alcohol (in mass quantities anyway, like the old farts, college students and wavers, there's growing numbers that don't drink at all) it forces the punks to go underground (ha ha so what if the party was in some girl's basement). MINOR THREAT's last gig...tsk tsk...the good die young...but the guitarist is off to college...let me just say that Lyle could do fuckin incredible things on that axe--a fact easy to overlook when you're hit with the over all power of this band...no mikes on the drum set but Jeff seems oblivious, pounding away--a mohawked madman...Brian now plays bass with the GIs...an addition that shouldn't hurt their sound one bit...and we can't forget ol' Ian--screaming at a wall so to speak with an inferior PA but doing a more than adequate job of stirring the crowd up--if you thought you'd heard it all on their first EP you'll herm in your briefs when you hear the new stuff slated for release as a four song EP...I got punched in the nuts good but managed to stagger out for the classic cover of "12XU"...all I can say is RIP. ARTIFICIAL PEACE (formerly ASSAULT AND BATTERY) were up next and I hope I haven't beat off too much already because this band was no letdown...only here can there be a band this great you've never heard of...hard and fast and all those other overused adjectives...all songs great with titles like "No Escape, No Excuse," "Enemy Minds" and "Danger UXB"...definitely an up and coming band--YOUTH BRIGADE are another band that at the time of this writing are breaking up...you may be asking "what's with these bands...all splitting?" Search me except they just aint jivin', you know like those musical differences, like what a shame...they're in the studio recording a new demo for release (as Dischord #5?). They've got some great new songs like "Barbed Wire" that will hopefully see the light of day along with their old faves like "I Object" and "Waste Of Time"...Keep your fingers crossed...RED C are a band I'd heard alot about but never seen--And yes this too was their last gig...but don't get the wrong idea...out of all these ashes there's bound to be some hot new bands (sorry, that was bad). Hey, why is the guitar player and the bassist bitching at each other? Their set ranged from loud raucous stuff to some guitar noodling by the drummer that was downright dull...but overall their set was great...the crowd kept yelling for "Six O'clock News." I guess an old favorite...IRON CROSS had to cancel, I guess because bassist Wendel (Formerly of SOA) couldn't make it, but they do have a demo tape out...to my knowledge America's only Oi band...granted they're going to have to bend a bit ideologically...but see interview w/vocalist Sab elsewhere in this issue...DEADLINE were next...their first gig...their singer had a TSOL tshirt on--well nobody's perfect. He seemed sort of nervous but I think w/ time they may be able to hone their sound into something great...they had misfortune of going on last when people were all just hanging out...oh wait...no there was one more band...it was...was it? Yes I actually think it was...NOTHING SACRED... jeez it was all like a swirling trip into another dimension...the highlight of their set was definately the classic "Abbie Mahler Is Going To Hell"... Bill Rollins, Mr. E, and a maniacal bass player make them a monster band that must be reckoned with...they only will perform in complete darkness...strange but true...

[OBIK: Horrible grammar--uncorrected for the most part, but an important show and some GREAT pictures.]
