iron cross

interview with Iron Cross taken from Touch and Go 20.

iron crossTV: So you do wanna make any general statements or anything about your band...
Sab: I think it's a bit much for Mr. Yohannon who I've never met or even heard of to start slagging us off...I mean I don't see anything racist in the Flex Your Head lyrics...
TV: So what inspired you to name the band what you did...
Sab: It's just a hard sounding name. That was the simple and only reason...its not a nazi symbol (as some would just love to envision it, ED).
John: Ya, it goes back to the 1800's...
John: It's just a hard sounding name you know...
TV: Instead of calling yourself the Moral Urban Reagan Haters or some such shit...
Dante: Youth Of Insane Children...
TV: Your music has always been alot slower than most other bands...
Dante: We don't like thrash.
Sab: We never wanted to play it--there's some bands that are really good at it but we never wanted to play it.
TV: So, John do you want to talk about being the new guy on bass? No one can accuse you of being new to this music (reference to the fact he was the original bassist in the British band THE UNWANTED). What were the early Roxy days like in 77?
John: Great--alot different than it is now...it became fashionable like it is now very quickly...at the time it was like everyone was trying to outdo everyone else, see how shocking you could be to people on the street and all of that--I mean people think it all started in 77 but in 76 and even 75 there were punks there but there just weren't that many punks around--it was real underground at that time.
TV: Was there a community at that time, I mean did you chum around with Johnny Moped or...
John: My band used to hang around with guys in Generation X and Eater...
TV: So what's your opinion of US bands?
John: In general it's not what I like or am used to listening to--a lot of the British bands and the "Oi" bands...I like Fear because I think they're funny on stage and I like some of the Adolescents stuff...I support the bands here in DC...
TV: So why did you need a new bassist?
Mark: Wendel had some problems...he wasn't being uh...
Dante: He fucked up.
Sab: He left us in the lurch 3 days before the Upstarts show.
Mark: So we sat downstairs and practiced with John and it worked out fuckin great...
Sab: Our second set was like the best we've ever played.
Mark: John fit in real well.
TV: What did you think of the Upstarts?
All: BLAAAAAA BOOO HISS.
John: We got kicked out of the dressing room.
Sab: Me and Mensi had it out.
Dante: Mensi got huffy, their general attitude was like "You're not stars, we are"...
John: They were basically taking the attitude that "we're a big band--we're professionals--and what we say is right and anything you say against us is wrong," and what Sab was saying was we've been listening to you for a long time and really like you and you come here and throw a load of shit on us...and that's fucked up.
Dante: He apologized on stage.
TV: So now you have your third bass player--
(laughter)
Sab: 4th...
Dante: Fuck you guys, try 19th...
Mark: Ian even practiced with us one time he was great...
Dante: Eddie...Ian...Toni...John...Wendell...Cynthia...we've had about 9...

subject change to

Sab: I would like to know from reading issue 2 of Max RNR how Mr. Yohannon can possibly go to sleep at night with all of his worries and hangups. The magazine is so jammed full of political, sociological rantings it reads like the communist worker's party booklet.
Mark: Is he a real dick, or what?
Sab: It's like he's carrying the burden of the world on his shoulders.
Dante: I feel sorry for him.
Sab: I mean, jusdging from his fanzing, maybe he's a red, maybe not--he's certainly left-wing...his fanzine is shit--the only political system that works is democracy..and whether we live in a democracy or not is a debatable subject...I mean, I'm not going to sit up on stage and quote Engles and Bakunin--the only politics I'm interested in are MY politics.

talk her about presidents/close proximinty to government functions here in DC and how we all could care less

TV: At least Carter admitted he lusted after women.
Mark: Reagan's son lusts after young men.
Dante: Reagan doesn't know how to lust any more.
Sab: What concerns me is who is shitting on me on a personal level.
John: You've got to look at things realistically. The music can't really do anything on a grandiose basis, especially in a country this bib. A lot of the songs this band has done have to do with life and a lot of it is kids and what's happening now...with you, personally...
