We stood outside of the Gilman Street Warehouse as the band packed and unpacked their equipment looking for lost stuff, and we pondered the miles left on a tire that had made it from Phoenix held together by duct tape! But even with a tour dubbed "Impending Doom Tour", the hassles at hand and the late hour, the band were in good spirits and we talked and talked. AOD are: Bruce: guitar Paul: vocals/guitar Keith: bass Dave: drums Paul: So what kind of a xerox fanzine is this gonna be in anyway??? Al: Well, we can just xerox your interview. Bruce: A special xerox pull-out!! Al: So what's the big plan? Bruce: Well we've decided to become a band! Dave: First we thought we'd do a sell-out metal album, but now we have a whole new concept, we're gonna become Viking Punks, with a whole new fashion... Al: Like the Vandals Party Vikings? Bruce: This is my plan: First: grow your hair. Two: get a better t-shirt design, one with a Viking on it, and death to sound men on the back. And three: I haven't thought about it yet. Al: It seems to me that bands from your section of the world are being signed by these big labels. Paul: That whole New York sound is that metal thrash kind of thing. Bruce: We could have done it though, we seriously could have done it. Dave: We're just taking our roots, which is like a lot of punk rock and just fitting it in with what we do now. As far as thrash tunes go, it gets kind of boring playing thrash tunes over and over. Paul: There's just so much you can do, it gets tired. Al: Is there a direction change coming up? Dave: Not...Well not that we've got Keith in the band we want to start working with more harmonies for one, he can sing good... Keith: Thank you Dave!!! Dave: No, no major changes, we just want to write songs... Paul: Like the slow songs, more of them. Dave: It might be a bit more vocal/melody oriented, a little bit slower, more rhythmic. Bruce: Like the stuff that we listen to and the stuff that we play are like two different things, it's amazing... Paul only listen to clasical and 77 punk, that's all he listens to. Dave: I'm into like all the art fag bands like Soul Asylum and umn.... Paul: He likes Squirrel Bait I'll bet?! Dave: I do. My favorite band is Cheap Trick. Al: So what do you like about the stuff that you do play, the energy... Paul: Well punk is is a lot more energetic, you just put a lot more into it. Dave: I don't know, we're kinda 4 individual hands. A lot of bands are way too serious...you have to get your point across and still come cut laughing in the end. Paul: But we have no point. That's why we could never sell out, because we never stood for anything in the first place. Bruce: We're not selling out, we're buying in, figure that out. Al: But what about just standing for high energy and putting fun back into it. Keith: Yeah, that's what we meant to say! Dave: Well there's bands that do the whole fun thing too, but I don't know, it seems like they're too rehearsed... Paul: They attract me as being genuinely funny characters--they're just trying to be funny. I don't want to mention the Dead Milkmen.... Dave: While we're not mentioning names, one of them are on your label... Bruce: I can think of two that are like that that begin with D... I don't know... Dave: We don't set out to be a funny band, I guess we're just funny guys. Paul: I don't know, maybe, maybe... Bruce: There is a controversy over who came up with the idea to sing about how much they hate sportscars owned by rich youngsters from New Jersey... Paul: Considering one came out two years before the other one. Al: Bruce, do you get a good response from your Flipside classifieds? Bruce: Oh yeah! I got a bunch of proof of purchases from Circus Fun cereal, so I'm expecting an Elephant Watch and a Nerd's Two handled Mug when I get home. Actually years later responses show up from those things. Dave: One of Bruce's many loves, Bruce likes to write to young punk girls... Bruce: That's a lie! I'm writing a song about Flipside Unclassifieds... Dave plays in a glam band back home! Al: Wow, do you have scarfs and stuff? Dave: No. I just sit home and listen to my records and uh, watch TV. Paul: I enjoy fishing, eating and sleeping. Al: Where do you fish? Paul: The water! (Laughter). Me and Jack our old bass player are fishin' buddies, we like to go out and fish. Keith: Well, I like to wash a lot, steep, eat--the standard living stuff. I used to be in a band called Pleased Youth and sometimes I just like to play guitar or practice my bass or just go out and socialize with people that I like. All: That's very good!! Paul: When are you gonna make an AOD video like the one you did of GBH? Al: Well when you come to L.A. you can play in Steve Alper's basement.... Bruce: Yeah.
