Negative Approach interview from Slum Words 2. Marcos "Marc S" Johnson conducted the interview.

NEGATIVE APPROACH is: John (vocals) 21, O.P. (drums) 17, Graham (bass) 18, and Rob (guitar) 20.

neg approachMARC S: How long has NEGATIVE APPROACH been together?
JOHN: About a year...a guy named Pete used to play bass for us in the beginning, he now plays guitar for the ALLIED. We also had this other guy named Zuheir, who used to play drums. They both played on "Lost Cause."
M: How much vinyl have you guys put out?
J: One song on a Midwest compilation called "Process of Elimination," and a ten song seven inch which is out now.
M: How many copies of the e.p. did you have pressed...and how is it selling?
GRAHAM: 1000.
J: Those are all sold out.
O.P.: We got another 2000 made.
M: Does N/A have any plans to put out an l.p.?
J: A twelve inch e.p.
O.P.: With ten songs on it.
M: What's the Detroit scene like?
G: People, places and shoes.
O.P.: It's cool...there's a lot of bands.
J: A lot of good shows, and bands like the ALLIED, FATE UNKNOWN, The AFFILIATED, FLESH COLUMNS, The MANIMALS, who fucking rule. There's usually about two cool gigs per month.
G: There's a lot of zaniness.
M: Will N/A be doing any touring?
G: Yes.
J: Yeah, this summer probably in July after we record our next record. We'll do as many east coast gigs as we can get.
O.P.: Maybe California later on.
J: Yeah, if we make enough money, we'll try to do some west coast gigs too.
O.P.: If we have enough cashwads.
M: What have been some of your best gigs?
G: The ones that people were at.
O.P.: GOVERNMENT ISSUE & BAD BRAINS.
ROB: The first time we played with the MISFITS was our best.
J: When we played with G.I.s and MINOR THREAT at the Freezer Theatre...those were wild shows.
M: Do you guys skate alot?
J: I dont skate.
G: Me and Rob skate on and off. O.P. skates a lot.
J: O.P.'s sponsored.
O.P.: Shut up!
G: By Powell and Tracker.
M: What are some of your fave bands?
R: AEROSMITH, SEX PISTOLS, 999, MINOR THREAT.
G: BAD BRAINS, DAMNED, MINOR THREAT, SCREAM.
J: MINOR THREAT, MISFITS, IGGY AND THE STOOGES, ALICE COOPER.
O.P.: MINOR THREAT, early STIFF LITTLE FINGERS, BLACK FLAG, BAD BRAINS.
M: Who writes the lyrics?
neg approachJ: I do.
M: What topics do they deal with?
J: I just write about things I hate.
M: What do you guys think about drugs?
G: Fuck drugs!
J: Does it really matter?
M: What exactly does N/A stand for?...is it to be taken literally?
J: Of course it's to be taken literally. We are totally against the traditional way of doing anything. N/A means going forward in life, doing things the way you want...not the way others want you to go. It's just an attack on the norm. Fuck labels...fuck hardcore!
M: What are N/A's goals as a band?
O.P.: We hope to tour Japan.
J: World tours.
G: All we want is to come out with a double live Budokan album.
J: We want to make records and have fun.
O.P.: Touring is fun. We'd like to play as much as possible.
M: Did you guys play with the EXPLOITED...what did you think of them?
All: No!
J: They were better than I thought they would be. But they still pretty much blew.
O.P.: They lacked originality.
J: There was no energy in them. All they did was come to America and cut us down and take our money. They can blow me.
