	I've had an incomplete tape of this show for a while, and man is the "almost
official" Live and Loud version an improvement.  Any fan of the 4-Skins should
check this out, particularly if you've heard the Bumper Sessions and think that
they were an improvement on the otherwise weak 4-Skins sound...  This is _raw_
in the extreme.  This is the only known live recording of the first 4-Skins line
up.  There's a tape of this show with a shuffled tracklist floating around.  Who
knows which is right.  Live and Loud was taken from either an ANAM or ANA1 tape,
since they got it off the guy who recorded it.

	Kinda wierd artsy 80's punk.  It does NOT sound new wavey, there's a strong
whiff of the 80's punk/oi sound.  Half of it is decent, half isn't.  The
singer/guitarist was apparently involved in a horrible car crash and became a
guitar strumming fundie Christian.  The B side ("For the Few I Please" onward)
has some surface noise that's noticable at the beginning and ends of songs.

	This is not the "Black Dots" session.  This sounds like it was recorded onto a
boombox.  The sound is decent, but the vocals are buried under the guitar.  I do
believe that this tape was used as the Bad Brains first demo.
	Here's something from the Caroline Records website about it:  "By the early
summer of 1979, the Bad Brains were already tearing up Washington, D.C. They
were armed with a tape they made at rehearsal, a real rugged thing, and were
looking for people to play it to. The Slickee Boys heard it and suggested the
band go out to record these songs at the fledgling Inner Ear Studios in
Arlington, VA."

	The Bleach Boys are slightly legendary british punk rockers from 1976/7.  As
anyone who's heard of them knows, either of their singles will set you back $75
at the very least.  This has both of their singles plus White Christmas, a
recent recording that hasn't been officially released (mp3 sourced, but it's not
available on the net), and a new version of Chloroform was left off the mp3.com
version of their only album.  Go to mp3.com and buy the damned album.  It's
worth it.  The Bleach Boys also have a website up:

Decent show, good quality.  The last "1977" cuts off.  This is an unknown gen,
but it's the best circulating version, and I got it from the guy who surfaced it
(the upgrade), so it's not generated at all.  Sound is slighly muffled and
that's the only thing keeping it from being an A.  The performance is typical,
nothing really special.

	ANAM>CDR!  Crime were San Francisco's first and best punk rock band (well,
maybe they're tied with the Avengers).  They were so good that Dirk Dirksen
couldn't think of anything nasty to say about them when introducing them.
Formed in 76, released a few singles (in 76, 78, 80 IIRC) and were bootlegged
constantly.  Unfortunately Crime stuff is impossible to find and never stays in
print long (even the legit reissue of Terminal Boredom from earlier this year is
getting hard to find).  Quality is _excellent_, if only all my tapes were like
this...

isn't actually that bad--the music has the beefy, crunchy Ex Menace sound
(recorded in the same studios!), it's just the soulless vocals that make me
think instantly of Greenday and all their clones.  They've got a noticable
reggae influence that's completely ruined by the vox.  Transferred on request.

	Fuckin' A!  I've had this tape for three months but haven't bothered to listen
to it because all I'd heard from the Crucifucks were their first two albums
(both of which are absolute shit).  This stuff pretty good, it's crunchy
political punk from the eighties.  Some of the tracks have crowd noise from a
live show in between them or the phone calls that were on their first LP.  Doc
still sounds like he has his balls caught in a cuisinart.

(sleeve G, waterdamaged and split, vinyl VG/EX) is up for trade/sale.  This is
the only item that I enforce a ratio for, 2:1, becuase I'd have to listen to the
LP to transfer it.

was the best punk album of '97.  They take the lessons of the Clash, the Ruts
and the rest of the class of 77 seriously, but make their own sound.  This is
nothing like their earlier material, even though they rerecorded "We Wanna Know"
and "Don't Conform".  Ironically the only bad song is the Ruts cover...

even higher.  The sound is so bad I can't even tell what half the songs are.

	Everyone was shitting themselves over this when it first surfaced, and
apprently some collector scum are still demanding 2:1 or even 3:1s for it (not
the guy I traded with tho!, props to John Etter).  Fuck 'em.  Most of these
tracks have either very weak vocals or none at all.  Aneurysm and Even in His
Youth fade in and out at the beginning and have somewhat rougher mixes, but
otherwise they're identical to the SLTS single and Hormoaning versions.  There
are a bunch of annoying dropouts in all circulating versions.

	This is a pleasant surprise, the tape had very low levels and a lot of hiss,
but once cleaned up it sounded pretty good.  Excellent session.  I do believe
that at the time this was recorded the only P&TTB stuff available was "Elvis is
Dead" on the Vaultage 78 comp.  This was used as a demo tape, and got P&TTB a
contract with No Future.

	The quality is really good considering that this was recorded with a camcorder.
This is a real piece of history, the Press were heavily involved with the SHARP
movement in its formative days and were on the last "Skins N Punks" album put
out by Oi! records.  This was recorded after Skins N Punks 5 was recorded, but
before it was released.  Roddy Moreno had just gone back to England, taking the
SHARP concept with him.  All the songs from S&P 5 are here, as well as an
unreleased number and some covers.  The band did five encores before the crowd
would let them leave.  Anyone who listens to punk and oi should get this--it's a
great show.  I finally managed to isolate and remove most of the annoying buzz,
bringing the grade up to a solid B+.

Johnny".  Timmy Chunks lends his throat on one song.  Taken from the Hollywood

seems strange that they wouldn't play "In a Rut" or "Babylon's Burning".

	These arrived with the Ruts rehearsal above, but they were obviously recorded
at different times.  This is a studio job for sure, very clean sound but more
primitive sounding than the rehearsal.  After doing a little research and
listening to all the Ruts demos I have I'm pretty sure that this stuff was
recorded around the same time as "Rich Bitch" and "Lobotomy".  The guitar has
the same cheap as hell sound and Malcolm still hasn't learned to effectively use
his voice.  The official date for those tracks (from the back of the Stepping
Bondage 7") is 1977, so the line up is prob'ly Malcolm Owen - vox, Dave Ruffy -
bass, Paul Fox - guit, Paul Mattock - drums.

a little hiss, but the sound is a lot fuller and the levels are higher.  Further

	Skrewdriver's third and rarest 7".  Recorded and released in 1979 on TJM
records.  Ian sounds like he's trying to imitate Howlin Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins,
Etta James and all the old boogie bluesmen on the A side.  The music also has a
real heavy blues influence (with wanky hairmetal guitar solos thrown in for good
measure).  Laughably bad.  The two B sides don't deserve the "laughable" prefix,
just plain bad sums it up nicely.  Skrewdriver broke up for the second time
after this release.  The last Skrewdriver release from Ian's nonracist days.

	Originally supposed to be Skrewdriver's third single, to be released in March
of 1978, but it was pulled by Chiswick at the last minute because of fears of
violence.  Skrewdriver broke up shortly after this was(n't) released.  There's
nothing really amazing here, but it's worth hearing all the same.

	These guys were featured in MRR's "Pioneers of Punk" a while back.  Hard rock
from 1972.  I think the best way to describe it is to quote the review that
turned me onto them, "a profoundly unpleasant musical experience".  I think the
guy who reviewed it liked hippy dippy folk rock or something--this is rock n
roll with some fuckin' balls. Worth checking out for the lyrics to "Hammersmith
Guerillas" alone. This is a bootleg, and Terry Stamp (guit, vox) is not happy
about it.

	From an original copy.  This is the Lions' second demo.  Pray for Julie is the
best cut, good playing, good production, just all around good.  Royal Killers is
also pretty great, with harmonica (Punk rock suffers a real lack of two things:
harmonicas and harpsichords.  And I'll bet you think I'm joking, too.) and some
really raw vocals.  The rest is solid--Guns and Children goes on a bit too long,
the cliched lyrics don't help, and it's also hard to tell whether the song is
about real guns or toy guns (or both), but that's a small qualm.  They also
demolish Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues in under a minute--raucous, wild
shit.  Dig it.

Young Lions - Welcome to the Freakshow | 13/40 | A | STD LP>CDR1
	Stupidly rare LP of this early Toronto punk band.  Half the album was recorded
in late 1983 (Freak Show through Pray for Julie) when the Young Lions were still
doing their punk/rock (not punk rock, punk/rock) thing*, the other half was
recorded in 1985, after they'd broken up and reformed.  The material is pretty
spotty, the last half of side B is particularly deserving of scorn, One Brick At
A Time sounds like a fourth-rate Police song, Freedom Fighter is a pretty bad
acoustic/folky number, and Outlaws is downright country...too much twang and
stupid lyrics ("I just wanna be a cowboy")... Other than that, and the weak
bass, this is pretty fuckin' hot.
	*In a Field on the "Something to Believe in" comp was recorded at the same
time.

	Despite the great lineup of bands, this comp is surprisingly weak.  It's not a
bad compilation, and I might even go so far as to say it's a pretty good comp,
but the poor sound quality and production take away from its impact.
	The sound quality for the most part is awful (several of the bands contributed
stuff recorded on a boombox).  The standout tracks are AOF, with three powerful
live cuts, die Kreuzen with three ass-kicking tracks recorded at a rehearsal
(why didn't their album sound this good?) and Husker Du with three more live
cuts from late '82.  Without question the best track on the tape is courtesy of
Suburban Mutilation--they just thrash along (and not in the modern sense of the
word) for a minute and a half--just great stuff.  The worst is from Big Black,
who give us a live version of Texas that just sucks.  Coming from me that should
really mean something.  The other tracks are pretty ty
